Rockies want Justin Turner as their 2B?

Rockies ship Slowey to Cleveland, push for 2B
Posted: 01/20/2012 04:01:14 PM MST

By Troy E. Renck
The Denver Post

With Slowey gone, the Rockies turned their attention to adding another second baseman. They talked with the Red Sox about Marco Scutaro, but the deal fizzled given the Rockies' lack of financial flexibility and Boston's reluctance to part with the veteran without another everyday shortstop option. The Rockies remain strongly interested in the Mets' Justin Turner, who is a more attainable target.

As it stands, Chris Nelson, D.J. Le- Mahieu and Jonathan Herrera will compete for the second base job in spring training.

Turner hit .260 with four home runs and 51 RBIs last season in 117 games.

The Rockies are pretty weak in terms of both starting 2B and starting 3B, they have guys that can backup those positions but not really guys capable of providing a respectable starting MLB infielder's stature...

Turner's not an offensive powerhouse and not a defensive whiz, but he wasn't bad with the bat or glove last year...I thought that for a #2, #7, #8 type of hitter, he was more than adequate; and he provided steady defense at both 2B and 3B...he'd probably fit in well with the Rockies, who already have both speed guys and power guys...

Will Rockies Swap Eric Young Jr. For Justin Turner?
by Clayton Collier

The Rockies remain strongly interested in the Mets’ Justin Turner, writes Troy Renck this morning in his column for the Denver Post.

The Rockies could still move Eric Young Jr. because of a crowded outfield situation with as many as four players competing for reserve spots, including Charlie Blackmon, Eric Young Jr., Tyler Colvin and Jamie Hoffman.

Young, 26, is a .246 hitter with 48 stolen bases over parts of three seasons with the Rockies. A switch hitter, Young has roughly split his time between the outfield and at second base, his natural position.

The Mets could certainly use his speed off the bench and with Daniel Murphy expected to get the bulk of playing time at second base, Young would be an excellent defensive caddy for him while also providing backup at all three outfield positions.

As much as I love Turner, a swap for young would make perfect sense for the Mets and give them plenty of versatility.

Original Post 1/20

The Colorado Rockies are still eyeing Mets infielder Justin Turner, says Troy Renck of the Denver Post. The Rockies have been discussing a deal for RedSox shortstop Marco Scutaro, but talks seemed to have stalled, and see Turner as a more attainable option than him.

Last month, the Mets and Rockies were said to have been discussing a deal for Jon Niese involving 2B/OF Eric Young Jr, who the Amazin’s seem to have taken a liking to. The Rox though, were not interested in a Turner-for-Young swap. Maybe this new development shows they are warming up to the idea of such a trade?

And for Cody Ross, too...

And rumor has it the salary dump of Scutaro was to free up a little moolah to sign Oswalt.
