Is it time to call Detroit about David Wright?

The Tigers don't have much offense when healthy and now it appears they have lost DH Victor Martinez for the year with a torn ACL. Two stories have already been in the press about whether or not the Mets should be talking to Detroit about a deal for David Wright. I would think they could get the Tigers to take on all of the salary (which to them is just a one year commitment as he has the right to opt out for 2013). In return they should be able to demand at least one if not two top prospects. After all, Beltran came for one prospect for half a year of service.

So, are the cash-strapped Mets better off with Murphy at 3B and Valdespin or Turner at 2B, or Lutz at 3B and Murphy at 2B PLUS whatever they haul in from Detroit while realizing $15.5 million in salary relief?

Or, is the better question, from strictly a business viewpoint, does such a deal make sense? As Branch Rickey said once when Ralph Kiner demanded more money after winning the HR title, "We finished last with you and we can finish last without you."

Or, put another way, would the fans be more hostile now to a David Wright trade netting back arguably good talent, or would they be more hostile in 2014 when he departs for the Marlins or whomever much like Reyes did and all you get are draft picks?

Or from Sandy's view, isnt is smarter to hope he has a strong first half and shop him to several teams at the deadline?

But suppose he suck in the first half or gets injured, then you have nothing.

Right now Detroit -- a team with a prayer of contending -- might overpay to fill a need.

Since the Mets' chances of winning are roughly the same as Rick Perry's, they should entertain all offers and then decide.

it's going to be hard to get good value for a player in their walk year, if traded during the season now...The new Collective Bargaining agreement has a stipulation that teams receiving a player during the season WON'T get draft pick compensation if that player signs with another team...

This team barely has enough going for it to stir up fan interest as it is...they trade David now and they can forget the entire season. God, I never believed this team could get THIS pathetic! Congrats, Fred, you've reached a new low! emoticon

Call me crazy (and you won't be the first to do so), but I think the team would be MORE interesting without David Wright than it would be with him.

Hear me out. We KNOW what David Wright can produce when he's good. We know how the past few years with the huge K numbers, poor defense and lack of power have been.

What we DON'T know is what Lutz, Satin or Valdepsin can do. Personally, I think Valdespin's cockiness and combination of speed/power would replace a lot of what we lost in Jose Reyes. Him plus Murphy at 3B would be more interesting to me to see. In his own way, David Wright is a lot like Carlos Beltran -- just quietly goes about his business, but isn't one to fire up the team nor the fan base.

I think if you could land Jacob Turner (Detroit's hottest pitching prospect):

and someone else, I'd pull the trigger to get the $15.5 million in salary relief and have something tangible to show in return for Wright (unlike what happened with Reyes).

I'd have to agree with you Reece...this team's situation was bleak when it had Beltran/Reyes/Wright, needing a little more...without Beltran/Reyes, the Mets aren't going to be more than a 4th/5th place team in the next several years with/without Wright...

Losing Wright at this venture, would be closer to losing Lee Mazzilli to the Rangers for Ron Darling and Walt Terrell (who was later spun for HoJo), than it is to impacting the team's future in a negative way...

The question really isn't:
Should the Mets trade Wright?
but:
When should the Mets trade Wright for both the good of his future and the future of the Mets?

"Face of the Franchise" isn't the same as "Team Leader"...Wright is not the player that he was a few years ago, and probably needs a fresh start with a competent team structure to get back to the player that he was...

Plus like you said, Murphy at 3rd is a much better idea than Murphy at 2nd...

Gee what a surprise this crew wants David Wright gone. I am stunned....not..

I hope he does get traded and soon. Then I can finally wash my hands of this team and root for a real baseball team. He is the last reason for interest in the team, sooner he's gone the better.

1. Your idea that saving $15 million is pointless in that it wont be redirected to improving the team, it will just be money saved by Jeffpon. Their opening day payroll is now at 90 million, like I said all year they COULD have gave Reyes his money and kept it under 110, but they choose not too, dumping Wright and anyone else will not bring in more talent, so KEEP HIM.

2. Wrights numbers dropped once Citi opened, why not see what happens with the new dimensions.

3.This team will NOT be as bad as you think, they were only 4 games under .500 without Ike, without Santana, etc etc.. saying they will suck for 4 years is just not true. Hell look at the Giants, they were 7-7 a month ago, calling for the coach to be fired, now they are 60 minutes from the Super Bowl.

You had me up to number 3, Hit. I'm sorry but this team has been lame for a while now, boring at best. And they've done absolutely NOTHING to improve themselves this off-season. NOW people want to get rid of one of the few proven pieces of talent we've got? Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

We don't KNOW what Satin, Valdespin and the others are capable of and even though I like Murphy, can we really expect much more from him? You can spin that any way you want, but it's not going to get this team contending again.

They're treading water until the Wilpons either get out from under their financial mess or finally face facts and sell...getting rid of the only remaining marketable player they've got is not going to help. It's just going to sink them that much faster.

I've lived through the 60's and the Dallass Green years and I can't remember ever being this disgusted with this team.

Don't get your panties in a bunch...I'm still rooting for them...but I'm certainly not mustering a whole lot of enthusiasm. Sigh. emoticon
