Re:

You can add "channels" very similar to the way that you would add an "app" on a smartphone or on your google page or on your Windows 8 screen...

There are 1000+ channels;
Many are freebies, of which some are real useful and others are real "niche" type of things;

Some of the more useful channels that will cost you a subscription somewhere:
MLB.TV;
Netflix;
Amazon Instant Video;
HuluPlus;
Blockbuster on demand;
Spotify Premium;
HBO GO;
Showtime;
Red Box Instant;

Some of the more well known "free" channels:
YouTube;
Vevo;
Pandora;
CBS;
FOX;
Watch ESPN;
History;
Smithsonian;
Daily Motion;

Re: Roku (3)?

MLB.TV works great on it...

no buffering (unlike on a Microsoft computer);

Picture quality and sound are outstanding (for example, on a slide the other day, I could see the individual grains of dirt/sand/clay spray in various directions);

Ability to choose the different feeds, start the game either from the beginning, join it live, or choose which 1/2 inning that you want to skip too;

Several different ways to get to the games (including archived) that you want to get to...For example, I've selected the "Mets" "Pirates" and "Jays" as my favorites so it automatically can get me to their games first...it even shows their upcoming schedule of games;

it also offers a recap of yesterday's game, which has more detail than the junk that you get from ESPN Sportscenter of BB tonight...

Re: Roku (3)?

The thing that surprises me the most, is how much better the music sounds and videos work on Roku using: Pandora, Youtube, Vevo and Dailymotion than they sound/buffer on a windows computer...

Maybe it's because my HDTV has a good sound bar, but the music sounds real good coming out of this little device...

I haven't tried any of the other channels yet that need a subscription (aka Netflix, Amazon, etc) because I don't have a subscription yet...I figured that can wait until I'm bored with the other stuff...

Re:

there are a lot of "public domain" types of channels...

I'm paging thru one called "Public Domain Movies and Series"...
some of the more interesting oldies:
"Escape from Gulligan's Island";
Les Miserables (1935);
A Christmas Carol (1910);
Last of the Mohegans (1920);
A cricket match from 1905;
Charlie Chaplin movies;
Hitchcock movies;
Silent movies;

Re:

Yesterday I did a comparison between the Roku and the HD Cable box:

Watching the Pilot Episode of Sleepy Hollow from Fox on both (go a couple minutes on one; then play the same scenes on the other):
Roku had a much more defined picture;
Roku's sound (playing through the same tv) was also sharper, TV volume for the same scene with Roku at 20 was louder/clearer than the Cable on-demand vs at 28.
With the Cable on demand version, you could NOT fast forward thru commercials;
With the Roku Fox channel, you could fast forward without issue;

The one thing that I have noticed though, is it occasionally gets a "glitch" during commercials, and will sometimes play the same commercial over; forget to show a commercial during the commercial break, and occasionally boot you out of the show back to the opening selection of the show...
