Re: The "check in" thread...volume I

I've got 3 other Acer products in my house that have never failed me: an Acer home computer (has it's issues with Windows 98, but works fine with Linux, so I run it dual boot); a nice wide screen monitor, and the only wired keyboard in my house (which is hooked up to my Think Centre because it works better corded than cordless)...I have a feeling that they are using an inferior hard drive which caused all 3 of the fails, since it was a much larger harddrive than the other HD's in similar priced/equivalent laptops...

funny that you mentioned Asus...because that is the laptop manufacturer that I bought for "myself" when my daughter's failed...I didn't have a laptop (I prefer a desktop) but I figured that I would enter the Windows 7 generation so that my daughter would have a laptop to finish the semester since hers was out to be fixed...

As far as I know, Asus has been the principle "Mother board" manufacturer for a long time...My son's computer that he built himself has an Asus motherboard in it; and other than the windows getting corrupted on it (and I had to make it a Linux OS computer) it works great...

I'm not a fan of Dell or HP; I'm not going to waste the money on an Apple; and the Asus was cheaper and had better features than the similar Toshiba (which is the name that I trust the most of the common laptops)...plus I already have a Lenovo for my work computer...

Well...I finally did round 1 of Christmas shopping today...man, does shopping this time of year suck, as well as trying to shop for someone else...I don't know what to get someone that is different and the person that I've lived with for the past 20+ years will like; I just know what she won't like...

I found a decent amount of stuff that would be good for me...and a decent amount of stuff that would be good for the house...but not a lot of stuff that says "I love you" or whatever meaningfulness...I'm just not impressed by what I see in the stores, so I wind up getting the same Cliché items almost every single year...I keep asking for a "wishlist" so that I can pick items that she'd actually like but never seem to get one...

I'm convinced CHristmas shopping has 2 purposes: 1 is to drive a husband into debt; 2 is to get the husband in trouble because we didn't think of the items that the wife has been thinking of but not telling us that she wants...

but it's so frustrating and inefficient...wandering around the mall for several hours to get pretty much the same things that I always do...

Thought I'd share this touching story given your circumstances...

A couple was doing last minute shopping on Christmas Eve. Walking through the very crowded mall the wife looked up and noticed her husband was no where around.

She became very upset because they had a lot to do. She used her cell phone to call her husband to ask where he was.

The husband, in a calm voice said, "Honey remember the jewelry store we went into five years ago, where you fell in love with that diamond necklace that we could not afford and I told you that I would get it for you one day?"
The wife, crying, said "Yes, I remember".

Husband: "Well, I'm in the bar next to that jewelery store."

lol...

speaking of jewelry stores...is it just me, or are the jewelry store commercials over the top this year? I swear their is 5 jewelry store commercials right now for every car/beer commercial & that proportion seems unusual...

Well, I don't want to start a war, but...

How is buying a hunk of rock or precious metal actually PROVING your love to your significant other? I remember growing up as a kid even though we were poor, my father's idea of parenting was to buy things rather than give of himself and his time. As I've gotten older I think you prove your love with how you treat your partner and a partner who insists on expensive gifts as "proof" of your love isn't worth the investment.

agreed...but try to explain that to a person that grew up in the "mine, mine, mine" generation...it's kind of akin to kids nowadays expecting a Wii or a smartphone or an IPad type of toy every Christmas/birthday...
