Best all-time sitcoms
Let's set some ground rules...just because "The Simpsons" on the air for 20 years, longevity doesn't necessarily equate to quality (though they have been surprisingly good in that regard).
I expect to see "M*A*S*H", "Mary Tyler Moore", "All in the Family" and a few familiar others. What I'm seeking are the more obscure ones that got lost in the shuffle but were MUST SEE viewing for however short their on-air lives were.
I'll throw a few out there for starters...
"Arrested Development"
"Better Off Ted"
"Bored to Death"

For me "M*A*S*H" is the quintessential.
Some others...
Maude
The Golden Girls
The Bob Newhart Show (the original, not his second go round, though that was very good too.)

Not a fan of Sit-Coms at all. If I had to pick I'd say
M*A*S*H
Golden Girls
Sanford and Son

Re: Best all-time sitcoms
I gotta think about this when I have time (been extremely busy this week)...and then I'll put up what I can think of...
One question however, what qualifies something as a "sitcom" vs a different category of tv show?

Situation comedy vs. hour long dramas or the more recent hybrids like "Psych" that blend comedy and drama into a one hour time frame.

Re: Best all-time sitcoms
Here's what I can think of off the top of my head...let me know if I'm wrong about them being "sitcoms":
I love 60's and early 70's shows:
Get Smart;
Gulligan's Island;
I Dream of Jeanie;
Hogan's Heroes;
Happy Days;
Others:
ALF;
Police Squad (the tv series was much funnier than the spinoff "Naked Gun" movies);
Sledge Hammer (cop that talked to his gun);

Re: Best all-time sitcoms
Those would all rate as sit coms. I'd forgotten about Hogan's Heros...another classic!

I like a lot of those 1 hour shows that are somewhere between the traditional 30 minute silly comedy and the 60 minute series cop show drama...
Things like:
Chuck;
Castle;
the Mentalist;
Persons of Interest;
WHite Collar;
Grimm;
I wouldn't call them "sitcoms" but at the same time, they aren't stiff (boring) dramas like "Hill Street Blues"...

Re: Best all-time sitcoms
almost forgot one of my all time favorite "sitcoms" (I guess that is how it would be categorized):
Batman (the Adam West version...not those god-awful movies that they have made in the past 20'ish years; they've turned Batman into a worse American version of James Bond)...

Re: Best all-time sitcoms
Have you actually watched any of the Batman movies? Many of them are actually really good, though there have been a couple that are questionable.
I don't know if I'd consider the original Batman series strictly a sitcom, but I guess it fits...it was just so campy it sort of transcended the traditional sitcom.
