All-Time Mets Hate List

When I saw the name of Oliver Perez on the list of available FAs it got me to thinking who else in team history elicited the same hostility from the fans and came up with this list:

Don't Let the Door Hit You on the Way Out

Not bad, but there are three I think you over looked:

At SS...Rey Ordonez. Few SS's created as much furor. Despite his sizzling glove, he had no bat and seemingly didn't care about it and I personally spent a hell of a lot of time defending him to angry fans who thought he was the worst ever.

At Catcher...you're right that not a lot of people stood out and I don't disagree with your choices here but you could also have included Charlie O'Brien on that list. For some reason, Charlie O just never got a lot of respect.

And among Relief Pitchers...while I certainly agree with your picks here, particularly Armando Benitez, I think mention needs to be made of John Franco too, who many fans were glad to see finally leaving the game.

And you left out utility players entirely. The Mets have had more than their share over the years and they usually don't garner too much hate, but I'd wager that among their ranks Lenny Harris got more than his share.

the problem with Ordonez, wasn't his bat...it was his arrogant attitude...guy was an Asshat with a capital A...

Oh agreed on the attitude, which is why I said he didn't seem to care. But his lack of offense didn't help any either.

In the comments after the article quite a few good candidates emerged -- Bobby Bonilla, Frank Francisco, George Foster, Kevin McReynolds, Luis Castillo, etc.

one name that I didn't see mentioned:

George Foster...for the longest time, George was the most expensive met of all time...and he quickly showed that his "talent" for the Big Red machine was either from being surrounded by a lot of offensive talent, or a result of a band box ballpark...plus he was a horrific defensive player...

he clearly had no bat speed, and refused to give up on using his overweight bats even though he was late on virtually all fastballs...

and when he lost his job to 2 other black outfielders, claimed racial discrimination...huh? You lost your job because you sucked, and those players were clearly better choices in the lineup, and dude, they weren't white...

and one thing that drives me nuts with the "best mets catcher" debate is...the guy that got his pitching staff into 2 World Series, despite being on a team without a lot of offense, never gets mentioned...not to discount what the other 2 guys mentioned did, but 90 % of being a catcher is defense, pitch calling and keeping your pitchers' heads on straight...

I had mentioned Foster at the bottom of my comment about most liked team entries.

I think that I missed it because it was a P.S. after the most liked even if they weren't the best list:

On the most liked by the fans (even if they weren't necessarily the best players):

C -- Gary Carter
1B -- Ed Kranepool
2B -- Edgardo Alfonzo
SS -- Buddy Harrelson/Jose Reyes
3B -- David Wright
LF -- Cliff Floyd/Benny Agbayani
CF -- Mookie Wilson
RF -- Rusty Staub
SP -- R.A. Dickey/Tom Seaver
RP -- Tug McGraw
MGR -- Gil Hodges

I also thought of a few more of the hate list -- George Foster and Kevin McReynolds

By the way, it took the good old "Control F" with foster as the search term for me to find it...
