What managerial skills should the Mets target?

"Not Collins" is a good start, but there's more. Click here.

Re:

sorry to quote you on this but here goes:

quote:

Speed Kills (Except When it Doesn’t)

As low percentage plays go, the stolen base gambles one of the three precious outs for the advancement of a single base. It requires both baserunning speed and the smarts to know how to use it. For the past several years the Mets have not utilized this option. The players they acquired with rare exception (Jose Reyes being the notable one) simply were not the kind of guys who were likely going to strike fear in the hearts of opposing pitchers and catchers. Still, there are players on the roster who seem to have the raw skill but never encouraged to use it to its fullest extent (such as Juan Lagares).

IMO, there is more to the "stolen base gamble" than simply risking an out for 1 base...part of it is !@#$ with the heads of the pitcher, catcher, manager, defense...

Oh, I agree with you. I remember when Mookie Wilson was able to do that quite effectively and Jose Reyes (in his prime). Lately, not so much...

one of the things that absolutely drove me nuts in the waning days of the Piazza era (before Reyes/Wright came along) was the "station to station" baseball...guys couldn't go first to 3rd on a single, 2nd to home on a single or first to home on a double...

by having a guy (or multiple guys) that can run well, not only can you turn singles/walks into doubles because of a steal, but you can score easily from 2nd on singles, tag up on fly outs, and how many times did Reyes in his prime force a defense into making an error or have a defensive player vacate their position and a batter got a hit where it would be a routine double play if a slower runner was on first?

that is why the OBP argument drives me nuts...someone like Nimmo or Dom Smith getting a higher OBP is not as valuable as someone like a young Reyes or a Amed Rosario getting a .330+ OBP because the faster guy is going to cause so much more offense once he's on base than a much slower runner will..

even the difference between Kevin Plawecki and Travis no'D can be somewhat of a factor if Plawecki can supply sufficient power...Travis runs like a catcher, whereas Plawecki can actually move when he is running the bases pretty well...maybe not a speedster, but at least like a Strawberry, HoJo, or an older David Wright could...

good points, but I don't really see what the big deal is with a bench coach having interviews while the team wasn't playing yet...what does a bench coach really do? The Yanks have someone paid off in Yankee Stadium, so it seems like every team has been doomed there this season (look at the Yanks splits...suck on the road, kick ass to a '84 Cubs level at home)

At this point, if Cora goes to Boston, I think that it will be Kevin Long...

and if Long gets the gig, I wouldn't be surprised by the Royals pitching coach being the PC (he just got fired in KC) and Grandy retiring and being the OF/1B coach...

Dave Eiland available, worked with Long/Grandy in Yankees organization

Let's see, it was pitching that fell apart last season, so let's bring in a guy who concentrates on hitting. Yup, Mets logic at its best...
