Handicapping the 5th starter race
Who's going to stake a claim to that role?
In the comments section someone brought up an interesting point. Lugo and Gsellman both have options available to return them to the minors. Montero may be out of options so it's possible he could sneak into the slot based upon his strong spring.

Re:
IMO: Gsellman is the 5th; Lugo/Wheeler in the pen with both available to go multiple innings and spot start...

whatever scouting report that the Mets had that Montero was a legit starter, while DeGrom was not...you really gotta question that scout's judgement...

Re:
Look at Montero's minor league numbers prior to his first promotion to the bigs:

It's easy to see why they were so high on him. What's really puzzling is the WHIP up until 2014. He was off the charts good...and awful since.

Re:
so did he lose his control, or is it harder to throw strikes when you have better hitters ready to sit on pitchers that don't nibble?

Re:
so if Lugo shows up back at Mets camp with that freak'show bleach blonde crap that his other team is doing at the WBC; should Trump deport him back to his country?
